LIAA Planner Covers Recreation in MAP's Smart Growth Tactics Publication


In the current issue of the Michigan Association of Planning's publication Michigan Planner features an extensive article about how intergovernmental cooperation impacts recreation planning, penned by one of LIAA's planners, Harry Burkholder, AICP.  The article covers the enabling legislation for joint recreation planning in Michigan, discusses the process of cooperative planning and presents several case studies of successful recreation planning projects in Michigan.  Check it out!

Program Director

General Description of Position:

This is an advanced professional position with limited program and personnel management responsibilities, including supervisory duties. Working directly with the Executive Director, the Program Director designs, plans, develops, and manages new projects and programs consistent with LIAA's mission and policies. The Program Director prepares grant and project proposals, assists in the planning and coordination of project activities, assists in the design and preparation of publications and marketing materials, and coordinates outreach and fund-raising functions while maintaining positive and professional relationships with LIAA's clients, funders, and supporters.

 

Compensation:

Examples of Work:

  • Provides creative program development and design to further LIAA's mission and policies, working closely with the Executive Director, Technology Director, and other staff members.
  • Provides project planning and management, staff supervision, and project evaluation support as requested by the Executive Director to help assure work that is timely, efficient, and of the highest quality.
  • Develops organizational goals and objectives, marketing plans, partnership agreements, and project proposals under the supervision of the Executive Director.
  • Researches and writes grant and funding proposals for submission to appropriate philanthropic organizations, as well as local, state, and federal units of government.
  • Assists in the design and development of new processes, tools and techniques to increase public access to information, expand civic engagement, and encourage the long-term preservation of community cultural and natural resources.
  • Works to continuously improve the speed, accuracy, interactivity, and competence of information technology applications developed and marketed by LIAA.
  • Assists with overall public and client relations providing dependable and accurate communications and acting as one of the primary contacts at LIAA for all clients and project partners.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including all phases of document preparation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the proven ability to develop and maintain excellent client relations.
  • Creative thinking and problem solving skills applicable to program design, development and marketing.
  • Knowledge, experience and high-level skills in all phases of grant development and writing.
  • Ability to manage complex projects, working under time constraints and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of environmental, natural resource, and human community issues and concerns.
  • Understanding of GIS technology, its applications and capabilities.
  • Knowledge of database management and web applications.
  • Appreciation for scientific objectivity, accuracy, and timeliness of information.
  • Project management and staff supervision skills.

Minimum Qualifications for the Position:

  • Master's degree in an appropriate field such as urban and regional planning, the physical or biological sciences, or community development.
  • Substantial education and/or experience in communications.
  • Project management and supervisory experience.
  • Experience with computer technologies and applications, including GIS.
  • Significant experience in fund raising, grant writing, and marketing.
