Joe VanderMeulen

Paul Riess

GIS Specialist Paul Riess has been elected to the board of directors for IMAGIN, a statewide organization that advances the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and spatially referenced information in Michigan.


Harry Burkholder

Community Planner Harry Burkholder has been appointed to the board of the Traverse City Downtown Development Authority (DDA). The DDA serves as the economic development agency for downtown Traverse City.


Kaye Krapohl

Graphic Designer Kaye Krapohl was selected to the prestigious Artist-in-Residence Program at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Kaye donated an original oil painting from her stay to the park's permanent collection.

Community Planner II

Full Time, Salaried

 

This is a professional position requiring a high level of confidence, experience, and dedication. The Community Planner II (CP) is a part of our project development, marketing and management team with a special emphasis on community education and outreach. The CP is responsible for: gaining the confidence and cooperation of community leaders; building community-specific information sets; engaging public officials and citizens in visioning and planning exercises for land use and resource management; drafting and editing key public policy documents (e.g., master plans); designing and developing educational materials for use in LIAA's web applications, and assisting in the design of new civic engagement programs. Additional responsibilities include marketing and promotion of LIAA's products and consulting services, grant and proposal writing, and the training of new staff. All work is performed under minimal supervision and a great deal of independence. The CP reports directly to the Executive Director.

 

Examples of Work:

  • Builds community contacts and coordinates efforts by local steering committees, including all scheduling, notification, and materials preparation.
  • Develops, drafts and edits key public policy documents through interactive community processes, including master plans, corridor plans, recreation plans and local ordinances.
  • Designs, develops, and executes community contact strategies, including promotional campaigns, opinion research, and educational programs.
  • Assists the Technology Director and other technical staff in the development and input of community-specific digital data for use in the CIS.
  • Assists the Executive Director and other staff in the development and completion of efforts to disseminate the knowledge gained by LIAA through its demonstration projects.
  • Assists in the design and development of human-computer interfaces that will support direct public access to an expanding range of information resources used for community planning and development decisions.
  • Provides support and back-up to other staff positions as necessary to assure smooth operation of LIAA and continuous client support.
  • Assists with project development, design, planning, and management, as necessary to support the Executive Director and Information Technology Manager.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Appreciation for scientific objectivity, accuracy, and timeliness of information.
  • Extensive training in urban or regional land use planning, including community Master Plans, zoning processes and procedures, housing and infrastructure development planning, and natural resource management.
  • Clear understanding of and competence in planning for the preservation of cultural and natural resources, including the protection of important ecosystems.
  • Knowledge of database management software and procedures, including data analysis skills.
  • Ability to manage complex projects, working under time constraints and deadlines.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees.

 

Minimum Qualifications for the Position

  • Masters degree in urban planning, community development, landscape architecture, or one of the natural sciences with an emphasis on the physical or natural resources.
  • Experience with a wide range of relevant computer software (e.g., word processing, presentation, databases, spreadsheets, GIS).
  • Training and experience in facilitation, project coordination and team building.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
